County Call Up for Daisy - Good Luck

We have some exciting news about one of our junior players - Daisy Ward.

Daisy has been selected to play and represent Cheshire in the Northern Junior Girls’ Jamboree, which this year is being held at Gosforth Golf Club, Newcastle in August 2018.

This is a 2-day event in which Cheshire will compete against Lancashire, Yorkshire, Cumbria, Northumberland and Durham for a team of 6 girls with handicaps between 14-36.

Daisy is the youngest girl in her team with a current handicap of 30.5. As you can imagine Daisy is very excited about this experience and opportunity.

We all wish her well and can’t wait to hear about it when she gets back. Good luck Daisy.

Deer Oh Deer!!!

For those eagle eyes amongst our members you may have spotted a visitor to our course over the past few weeks.

Here are a couple of images - many thanks to the Wards and Mike Baker for the pictures.

Macclesfield Golf Club Junior Open Day - Take 2 and ACTION!

On Sunday 29th April Macclesfield Golf Club eventually stepped into action and welcomed the next generation of golfers to their Junior Open Day, ‘eventually’ as this wasn’t their initial chosen date.

On the 18th March Macclesfield woke up to the golf course covered in snow, great for sledging but not for golf, so the junior committee of Paul Tovee, Rick and Kerry Ward and PGA coach David Myers were forced to postpone and set another date. They re-prepared the marketing materials and went about promoting the day again via the club website, clubhouse TV, social media, local schools and community groups.

The 29th April eventually arrived and they all had another careful eye on the weather. Fortunately, even though a bit chilly, the forecast was set to stay fair all day - phew!

At 9.45 AM Coach Dave pulled up in his car which was bursting with equipment. The junior committee with help from some keen

junior members and Junior Captain and apprentice greenkeeper Tom Silcock got to work setting up the inflatable practice nets, chipping nets and various bits of putting equipment including loads of clubs and balls.

With five minutes to go before the planned start time of midday Paul and Dave stood looking at the fully equipped yet empty putting green, Paul nervously asked ‘Dave have you ever done an event and no-one turn up?’ Other than bad weather this was our next worst fear.

Fortunately Dave didn’t need to give an answer because literally at that point about twenty kids accompanied by parents, grand-parents uncles and aunties came marching over the brow of the hill and got straight involved with putting, chipping and generally have a great time, some giving golf a go for the very first time.

For the organisers the next three hours were a bit of a blur but they all swung into action with helpful golfing advice from Dave, Rick and Paul and Kerry saw to it that all the adults had the pre-prepared printed information they needed should any kids wish to join up.

Junior Organiser Paul said afterwards ‘We purposely didn’t want to give it the hard-sell, it was more of a fun day where everyone was welcome to give golf a go and enjoy the day. We believe it was a huge success with over 70 young golfers taking part.'

A big thanks to all who attended and to everyone at the club for their support and for providing complimentary refreshments.
A massive thanks to coach Dave for providing all the kit. Here’s hoping we have encouraged more kids to get into this fabulous game and enjoy the health and social benefits it brings.

The Men's City Glass Team Beaten by Didsbury

Macclesfield's men progressed through to the last sixteen
of the Manchester & District Golf Alliance City Glass Foursomes
Team Chamionship.

The Manchester and District Golf Alliance was formed in 1924
and is reputed to be the largest of its kind in the Country.
In the current year there are 114 affiliated clubs.

Our men reached this stage in the competition by beating
Bramhall and former winners Helbsby with a whitewash
victory at home.

The team played away at Didsbury on Friday evening 4th August
but sadly the home team were just too strong and with home
advantage the eventual result was 6 matches to 1.

A valiant effort by the Macclesfield men, the furthest we have
reached in this competition.

Good luck to Didsbury in the last 8.

The Juniors are getting going at Macclesfield Golf Club.

We have welcomed 23 new junior members and the
Junior Academy launched last week which will provide our
junior golfers with a structured course of tuition, fun
competitions, days out and fun evening and weekend events
between now and March 2018.

Our PGA coach David Myers is doing a great job providing
fun, practical sessions for the juniors and this Wednesday we
start the next series of coaching.

For more information and to take part please contact
David Myers PGA or Paul Tovee our junior organiser.
Portpatrick 2017
Another great trip was enjoyed this year to Portpatrick in Scotland where all golfers enjoyed some unbelievable weather and the usual fantatstic hospitality with a great matchplay challenge by our Irish opponents.

Unfortunately MGC were unable to beat the Irish team on this occasion but it was very close indeed losing by just one match over the two rounds.

Rookie Paul Tovee took the individual Prize for Macclesfield Golf Club with a two round stableford score of 71.

PGA Award for Jamie
Ryder Cup hero Jamie Donaldson received a PGA Recognition Award for his outstanding contribution to golf at a PGA fundraising lunch in

The 41 year old, who claimed the winning point for Europe in the 2014 matches against the United States, was the guest of honour in the annual event at the Midland Hotel which raises money for the PGA Benevolent Fund.

Donaldson will be forever remembered for sparking jubilant celebrations with a sublime nine iron to within inches of the flag on the 15th of the PGA Centenary Course to defeat Keegan Bradley 4&3 in the singles at Gleneagles two years ago.

It capped a career highlight to date for the Welshman who was playing off a seven handicap at aged 16 but climbed through the amateur and professional ranks on the back of hard work and dedication.

Along the way he has overcome a career threatening injury and landed the biggest win of his career at the 2013 Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship, holding off Justin Rose and Thorbjørn Olesen to win by one shot.
The Abu Dhabi triumph came only six months after he broke his European Tour duck with victory in the 2012 Irish Open, where he fired a stunning 66 to win by four strokes at Royal Portrush.
He also won the Thailand Golf Championship at the end of 2014 while he notched three Challenge Tour victories to his name as he was coming through the ranks.

PGA chief executive Sandy Jones said: “Few people will forget that winning shot to clinch the Ryder Cup at Gleneagles. It was a fantastic moment but was richly deserved for all the hard work and dedication Jamie has shown over the years which has seen him rise to the highest levels of the game both as a top amateur and professional.

“We are delighted to present the PGA Recognition Award to Jamie at this annual Manchester lunch which helps raise money for the PGA Benevolent Fund.”

Up, Up, And Away
The drone filming of the course is now up live on our website.

Each hole has it's own flyover and from the air the course looks fantastic. All the great work Mark and his team have been putting in can be really appreciated.

A massive thanks to Greg, Jinny and the team at Lunar Aerial Imaging for providing us with such a fantastic product and service. More of their work can be viewed on their website:

Big Ronnie's Making His Mark
Macclesfield Golf Club had a recent visit by journalist Geoff Garnett.

Geoff Garnett from The Golfers Weekly & Macclesfield Express came
up to the club to meet our Head Greenkeeper Mark 'Ronnie' Hillaby and Rod Price.

Geoff had heard on the grapevine about the wonderful condition of the course and about all the hard work Mark and his team have been doing.

Geoff inteviewed Mark about the work going on and the improvements being made, following consultation with Jamie Donaldson and course achitect James Edwards.

We have had many visitng clubs recently in the mens, seniors, ladies
and junior sections and the feedback the club has received has been excellent. Everyone has all been extremely impressed with the condition of the course and the warm welcome they have received.

Very many thanks to Mark and his team for all their efforts, the course is in fantastic condition and we are very lucky to have such a dedicated and talented greens staff.

Look out for this story - coming soon.

Spring Cup Has a Last Minute Visitor
Someone familiar turned up for a round on Saturday for our first major of the year - The Jamie Donaldson Spring Cup.

Honourary Life Vice President, Jamie Donaldson, enjoyed an afternoon round with club members in the glorious sunshine.

The course was in fantastic condition, with some challenging pin positions but this didn't faze Ryder Cup winner Jamie who finished his round with a respectable 4 under par.

Jamie was also on hand to chat with members after his round and present The Spring Cup to this years winner Gareth Robinson.

There's Something In The Air
Is it a bird? Is it a plane?
No, it's Greg with his drone!

For those who have played this week you may have seen something a little strange in the skies above the golf course. Local drone pilot and owner of Lunar Aerial Imaging, Greg Chivers, has been out filming some quite stunning footage of the course with his state of the art drone.

To see more of Greg's work visit his website -

The filming is still ongoing but here are a few images to help whet the appetite.
Design by Donaldson
Jamie recently walked the course with our head green keeper and course architect James Edwards.
They looked at what further enhancements can be made to the course such as fairway and green shaping.
